Claude Cowork Troubleshooting Guide
Encountering issues with your agentic tasks? Most problems can be resolved by checking app persistence, usage monitoring, or file permissions.
Problem: Claude stopped working on my task
Solution: Ensure App Persistence
Claude Cowork requires the Claude Desktop app to remain open throughout the entire task. If you close the app or your computer enters sleep mode, the virtual machine environment will shut down, ending the session.
Tip: Check your macOS Energy Saver settings if you are running long tasks.
Problem: I'm hitting usage limits very quickly
Solution: Strategic Task Allocation
Because it involves complex sub-agent coordination and file operations, Cowork consumes significantly more usage than standard chat.
- Use standard chat for simple questions or drafting.
- Reserve Cowork for complex, multi-step tasks that require local file access or web research.
Problem: Files aren't appearing where expected
Solution: Verify File Permissions
Claude requires explicit permission to access specific folders on your macOS system. If a task finishes but you don't see the output:
- Check if you granted Claude access to the target directory.
- Review the final message from Claude; it will specify exactly where the files were written.
